Misfits vegan protein bars have taken social media by storm. I saw ads on top of ads for these bars, until finally I caved and looked them up. What really stuck out to me were the unique flavors (I had been looking for a chocolate raspberry flavor for years!), relatively high protein, and low sugar. I was still wary about purchasing them, but what sold me was the variety box and limited edition variety box. I don’t like buying full cases of things I haven’t tried because I am highly picky, so trying a variety was perfect.
Protein bars are by far my favorite and go-to travel snack, so I like trying new brands and flavors. However, this review is general, specific to me (the absolute best one depends on what I am in the mood for), and includes *most* flavors they’ve had since 2022 (there have now been several specialty flavors not here). They have also updated the packaging, but I personally like the packaging featured here, so I have chosen to leave it. Also – these are carbon neutral, how awesome is that?!
Note: These DO NOT melt well. Please, do not leave them in a hot car. They do not do nice things.
I was in no way paid or compensated by the company to write anything in this post. I was motivated to write it because I was curious about other’s opinions and had yet to find a list that suited my needs/taste.
General Flavor of Misfits Protein Bars
Flavors range from basic chocolate (dark chocolate brownie) to unique flavors like birthday cake. Each flavor is equally sweet and overall, I like most of the bars. I am not a huge fan of sweet, and these are definitely sweet, but I balance it with Nugo Slims bars (they only have mint and peanut flavors, though) which are much less sweet. These remind me of some of the main things people look for in candy bars but with different macros. The only caveat I have for overall flavor is some flavors taste similar or do not taste like what they are marketed as – we will get to that.
General Texture of Misfits Protein Bars
I have read a few reviews positing these bars taste like and have the texture of cardboard. I don’t get it. These have a solid, firm base, but mixed with the crunchy bits, caramel-textured layer (flavored differently in each bar), and chocolate coating, I don’t understand the cardboard comments. The base is typical of a good protein bar, not weirdly chewy or hard. Dry on it’s own, but it’s good paired with the gooey filling. I have had a few bars since this review and some are drier/cardboard-ier then others – I wonder if “freshness” is a factor?)
Ranking Misfits Protein Bars from Best to Worst
These rankings are strictly my opinion. My favorite might not be your favorite, and same with ones I would not buy again. Hopefully my opinions will at least give you an idea, though, and you can factor in your preferences. Some of my preferences do change based on my mood too (wanting chocolate or not).
Speculoos Cookie Butter are at the top of my list because how surprising they are. Chocolate and cinnamon? Gross. Except it was delicious! The uniqueness of flavor, surprise, and enjoyment I got out of this vegan Misfits protein bar puts it at the top for me. I have never seen another flavor or bar like it (I have seen some cinnamon inspired flavors, but I have not enjoyed them). The cinnamon is light, and it takes a few bites to get the full taste. Because it is a chocolate covered bar, keep in mind it might not taste 100% like a Speculoos cookie with chocolate, but it tastes like some happy medium.
Birthday Cake Misfits protein bar is also high on my list because of it’s uniqueness, flavor, and enjoyment. There are a few other brands with cake flavor, but they are pretty disappointing for me. When you first bite into this Misfits flavor, I do admit it’s kind of confusing. The gooey layer is fruit flavored (not sure what exactly), so at first I questioned the birthday-cake-ness. After trying a couple more times, the taste of cake does come through, but it’s again unique in a great way.
Dark Chocolate Raspberry was a flavor I have always wanted to have. Nugo Slim brand has them, but they are not vegan, so I was super excited to try these. This flavor is arguably the most true to it’s name – it has an incredibly strong raspberry flavor paired with the basic chocolate, and it was enjoyable.
Chocolate Caramel is another flavor that was simple but enjoyable. The caramel flavor was not strong for me, but it was a good go-to when I wanted something more fancy, but in the normal range.
Dark Chocolate Brownie is a straightforward chocolate protein bar. If you like the texture and sweetness of the other bars, but are looking for something more familiar, this is your bar right here.
Up to here (the dark chocolate brownie) above, I would probably get a full case again. Below, I would get single bars or the variety box, but not full cases – with a couple exceptions.
White Chocolate Cookies and Cream. I wanted to love it. So badly. But it just didn’t taste like cookies and cream to me. It had a nice overall flavor, yes, but it just was not what I was hoping for. If these bar are ever sold as singles, I would try one or two again, but not another case.
Chocolate Peanut is lower on this list because it’s a standard/basic flavor. It’s not bad, but I did not love it. If you want chocolate and peanuts, that’s what you get with this bar – with plenty of sweetness to boot.
PB&J may have been my biggest disappointment in all honesty. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted good. I just did not taste any PB&J flavor. I try lots of PB&J flavored things and I am always disappointed, so I was not surprised, but I at least liked the way these taste in general unlike other things (protein bars, pretzels) I have tried! I would get singles of these even though they do not taste how I wanted.
Chocolate Hazelnut tastes nicely chocolate-ly. Unfortunately, I did not taste hazelnut at all. For me, that’s very common. Most hazelnut chocolate things I have tried do not taste strongly of hazelnut to me, so I would recommend trying this one for yourself. I suspect the lack of hazelnut might be a “me” thing, but let me know your thoughts if you try it.
White Chocolate Cookie Butter took a couple of bars for me to taste the cinnamon flavor. It’s very light like some other flavors, and I do not enjoy it as much as the regular chocolate speculoos. I enjoy it’s light cinnamon-y flair to finish the case, but I will probably stop at the case.
White Chocolate Salted Peanut was not my jam, but it gets points for uniqueness. It was an earlier flavor I tried, so I really enjoyed the white chocolate, but it wasn’t very true to it’s name for me flavor wise. The salt and peanut was overshadowed by the white chocolate, but everybody’s taste is different, so you might be able to taste them more.
Chocolate Banoffee is perfect for people who like banana flavor. I personally do not like banana flavor (I never liked banana laffy taffy or banana candy of any type either), but those who do will love this flavor because it’s chocolate, caramel-ly banana.
